Polycystic Kidney Disease Assay At Cornell University Uses Transgenomic’s Surveyor Nuclease & WAVE Technology

Saturday, April 4th, 2009

Transgenomic, Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: TBIO). In a peer-reviewed paper published in the February 2009 issue of the journal Human Mutation, a team at Weill Cornell Medical College New York describes in detail the key advantages of using Transgenomic’s Surveyor Nuclease technology for mutation scanning of PKD1 and PKD2, two important genes used in the diagnosis and prognosis of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD).

Covaris Introduces DNA Shearing Service

Saturday, April 4th, 2009

Covaris Incorporated announced the introduction of DNA shearing service using Covaris instruments and technology. Over the past few years, Covaris instruments have become the gold standard for DNA shearing application, as a sample preparation step for next generation sequencing. The Covaris process is validated and compatible with all next-gen sequencing platforms. This process is highly reproducible and gives narrow size distribution.

IMMUNOLOGY: Girls lacking the protein ITK at risk from fatal viral infection One of the most common viruses to infect humans is EBV. Although most people show no or few signs of infection, some develop glandular fever and boys with mutations in either one of two genes on the X-chromosome (SAP and XIAP) develop a fatal lymphoproliferative disease.

Epigenetics: Ali Shilatifard And Colleagues Aim To Clarify The Definition

Saturday, April 4th, 2009

Ali Shilatifard, Ph.D., Investigator, has joined with a team of colleagues to propose an operational definition of “Epigenetics” – a rapidly growing research field that investigates heritable alterations in gene expression caused by mechanisms other than changes in DNA sequence. Dr.

Major Aspergillus Genomics Supplement Published By Journal Fungal Genetics And Biology

Saturday, April 4th, 2009

A major effort from within the Aspergillus community has resulted in the publication of an exceptional supplement by the Elsevier journal Fungal Genetics and Biology. The supplement provides extensive studies based on the genome analysis of two Aspergillus species: Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus nidulans. The publication was enabled by Eurofungbase, a coordination action programme funded by the European Commission, and was strongly supported by DSM.

Gene Protects Against Neurotoxins That Spur Inflammation And Parkinson’s Disease

Saturday, April 4th, 2009

A new study in the April 3rd issue of the journal Cell, a Cell Press publication, helps to explain why people who carry mutations in a gene known as Nurr1 develop a rare, inherited form of Parkinson’s disease, the most prevalent movement disorder in people over the age of 65. They have found evidence that the gene normally acts to suppress an inflammatory response and, in turn, the production of neurotoxins in the brain.

Breast Tumor Oxygen Status Revealed By Light

Saturday, April 4th, 2009

Light directed at a breast tumor through a needle can provide pathologists with biological specifics of the tumor and help oncologists choose treatment options that would be most effective for that individual patient. Duke University bioengineers have developed a light-based system that can quickly and easily provide important information about oxygen levels within a tumor while it is still in place.

Getting Down To Cancer Basics – Cancer Mutations In The Heart Of Gene Regulation?

Saturday, April 4th, 2009

Researchers have identified a new cancer gene – one that is common to many cancers and affects the most basic regulation of our genes. The new example – a gene on the X chromosome called UTX – is found in 10% of cases of multiple myeloma and 8% of oesophageal cancers. UTX plays a role in overall regulation of the activity of many genes and it is possible that other genes with similar roles will also be found to be involved in different tumour types.

Link Between Increase In P53 Mutation And Advanced Colorectal Cancer In Blacks

Saturday, April 4th, 2009

Researchers have identified a possible genetic cause for increased risk for a more advanced form of colorectal cancer in blacks that leads to shorter survival, according to data published in Clinical Cancer Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.

New National Genome Center To Underpin Food Security And Animal Health

Saturday, April 4th, 2009

A new national centre to analyse plant, animal and microbial genomes has been announced by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC). The Genome Analysis Centre (TGAC) will be based on the Norwich Research Park and will provide genome sequencing to underpin advances to improve food security, to protect UK agriculture from exotic animal disease and exploit weaknesses in microbes to develop new ways to kill superbugs.
